Monona Grove Teachers Reach Tentative Pact
The Monona Grove Education Association has reached
a tentative agreement with the school board in its bitter 1999-2001 contract
dispute.
State mediators Dan Nielsen said union representatives
agreed at the close of a marathon 12-hour session last week to "bring
a proposal from the mediator" to other teachers.
The Capital Times reported that the district and
the union tentatively agreed on a 4.25% annual increase in salary and
wages combined. That is higher than the 4.1% the board offered, but not
as high as the 4.6% the Monona Grove Education Association sought in recent
formal proposals.
In a written statement, Neilsen said: "At the
mediator's request, all parties agreed to refrain from any public comment
about the substance of the proposal until the district's teachers have
had an opportunity to review its terms."
Many teachers have refused to perform non-contractual
duties to protest the stalled talks. In April, teachers picketed during
the official opening of the new high school. Teachers also have staged
sit-ins at school board meetings.
