The State Legislature this week busied itself with several education-related bills before the regular legislative session ends today. Among the issue taken up by the Assembly and/or Senate are:
Senate Bill 396: Virtual Charter School Legislation
Wednesday the State Senate voted to pass new compromise legislation that keeps online schools available for Wisconsin families while increasing quality and accountability standards. The measure, which was negotiated between Sen. John Lehman, Governor Doyle’s office, and Rep. Brett Davis, passed in the State Assembly on Tuesday and the Governor is expected to be sign it into law soon.

Assembly Bill 482: MPS Residency Requirements
The Assembly on Tuesday passed AB 482, prohibiting Milwaukee Public Schools from imposing residency requirements on teachers. The measure passed with a vote of 62-35. This is a 2007-08 WEAC Legislative Agenda item. However, it appears unlikely the Senate will take up the bill during the 2007-08 session.

Senate Bill 251: School Safety
The School Safety Bill, SB 251, passed the Senate on a voice vote Wednesday. This bill empowers teacher’s aides and teachers to deal with disruptive and dangerous students in the school setting by sending them to the principal.

Senate Bill 349: Voucher school record-keeping
The Senate on Wednesday passed SB349 on a vote of 18-15. The bill requires private schools participating in the Milwaukee Private School Voucher Program to maintain student progress records, provide records to parents, transfer records to Milwaukee Public Schools if the voucher school closes, issue a high school diploma or certificate upon student graduation, and send voucher student records to other schools when requested.

Senate Bill 486: Voucher School teacher licensure
SB 486 passed the Senate 18-15 Wednesday. The bill requires licensure of instructional staff at private schools participating in the Milwaukee Private School Voucher Program.
