Background
A working classroom is one where students are safe and healthy. WEAC
has consistently promoted efforts to improve environmental quality in
schools as a way to enhance the learning experience of students. WEAC
is also a leading advocate for expanding the staff’s role to maintain
discipline and safety as part of the overall educational experience
for kids.
Legislative history
Other states, including Minnesota and Connecticut, have recently taken
action to address environmental quality in schools. The Consumer Federation
of America has developed model legislation on indoor air quality in
schools, and WEAC is working with elected representatives to have legislation
adopted as the Wisconsin School Indoor Environmental Quality Act.
WEAC also supports passage of a law to require anti-bullying and peer mediation curriculum in schools and the expansion of existing laws to enhance the ability of education support professionals to help with maintaining school safety and discipline.
WEAC position
WEAC supports the following:
Improve environmental quality in schools
Pass the Wisconsin School Indoor Environmental Quality Act, which, among
other things, would require the development of plans by the state and
all local school districts to guide local decisions in the maintenance
and construction of schools and the quality of the environment in which
children receive instruction.
Promote anti-bullying curriculum
Implement programs to promote peer mediation and anti-bullying curriculum
in schools.
Add support professionals to school discipline law
Include Education Support Professionals (ESP) in the school discipline
law so they have the authority to keep classrooms and schools working
for kids.
