| History and Overview of CAUS South |
| During the 1970s collective bargaining and political activity became primary aims of teachers. The National Education Association (NEA) and the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) reorganized to meet the needs of the membership. The Unified Services (UniServ) concept was born and UniServ units of approximately 1200 members were formed with one professional staff (UniServ Director) and one associate staff employee per UniServ. The first Wisconsin UniServs were formed September 1, 1972 and the remaining UniServ units organized within the next two years. Capital Area UniServ (CAUS) was formed in September of 1973. At that time approximately 1150 teachers came together as one UniServ unit, created a governing board and hired the first UniServ Director. One year later, October of 1974, CAUS had grown so much that the organization divided into two UniServ units -- Capital Area UniServ North and Capital Area UniServ South. During the 1980s, education support personnel began organizing and joining NEA, WEAC and UniServs. At present, CAUS South membership includes over 2,436 full time and part time teacher and ESP members in twenty two bargaining units located in fourteen school districts. In 1987, a second UniServ Director was added. CAUS South provides members with direct services and skills development for collective bargaining, contract administration, professional development and the acquisition of skills needed to represent members in their labor relations with the employing school districts. |
