History
| During the 1970's teachers became more involved in collective bargaining and political activities, and it became obvious to the National Education Association and the Wisconsin Education Association Council that changes in servicing members were necessary. UniServ units of approximately 1200 members were established to further the goals of teachers and other school district employees. To implement this program, both the NEA and WEAC made funding available for the establishment of UniServ units. Capital Area UniServ (CAUS) was formed in September of 1973. At that time approximately 1150 teachers from locals that are now part of either CAUS-North or CAUS-South came together as one UniServ unit. A year later, in October of 1974, CAUS had grown to the extent that it was necessary to split the unit. Out of that split came the present units, CAUS-North and CAUS-South. CAUS-North established its own governance structure and elected officers. Currently, the CAUS-North unit is comprised of twenty three (24) locals, with nearly 3000 members. Local associations of teachers are from Cambridge, Columbus, Deerfield, DeForest, Fort Atkinson, Jefferson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills, Lodi, Marshall, Oregon, Palmyra-Eagle, Sun Prairie, Waterloo and Waunakee; educational support staff (ESP) locals are from Columbus, Deerfield, DeForest, Fort Atkinson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills, Lodi and Waterloo; and CAUS-North Retired. CAUS-North Directors are Anne Boley, Director, hired in January, 1996 and Adam Birnhak, hired in January 2001. Our staff continues to provide CAUS-North members with services in collective bargaining, contract administration and training programs that cover a spectrum of subjects and skills. The CAUS-North staff also includes Staff Assistant Sherry Lewis, who was hired in October, 1977, and a Secretary, Margo Josheff, who was hired in February, 1995. |
