Mike Dellger, of the Kohler Education Association, has written and recorded The QEO Flu, a blues tune that captures the frustration teachers are feeling after 11 years of being subjected to the salary restrictions of the Qualified Economic Offer law.
The QEO Flu
By Mike Dellger
I read in the paper, (and) I heard on the news
Some sickness is rampant, in schools running loose.
It's here in Wisconsin; it's making some good educators turn blue.
Yeah, they've all contracted, that killer disease called the QEO Flu.
It started in Madtown 'bout 10 years ago
When Tommy was king there and running the show.
He said to some teachers, "You're costing my good friends a dollar
or two
But I got a solution, now you're gonna catch it, the QEO Flu."
Nobody's quite certain what caused this aggression
But it's all around and there's cause for alarm.
It's taking its toll on a noble profession;
A kick in the pants, not a shot in the arm.
I went to my doctor, I was seeking a cure.
She looked at my contract, then she knew for sure.
She said she was sorry, but it was too late for me to pull through.
That's just part of the bargain, when you get infected with QEO Flu.
Good teachers stand waiting by the Capitol door,
The best and the brightest, they can't take it no more.
That virus is spreading, New Holstein and even to Reedsville, too
Better come to your senses, before every school gets the QEO Flu.
If you like this song, you might want to revisit another song recorded in 1997 by Janesville teacher Mike Wesling, called The QEO Blues.
