On November 19, 1997, Janesville teacher Mike Wesling first performed "The QEO Blues" to an enthusiastic audience of teachers and supporters crowded around a bonfire during an anti-QEO rally in Janesville's Palmer Park (below). The song, written by Wesling, immediately caught on.
"The QEO Blues" uniquely combines an upbeat tune, humorous lyrics and a very serious message: Wisconsin's Qualified Economic Offer law is unfair to teachers. Wesling's entertaining performance will have you smiling and scowling at the same time.
Here, we provide two audio files for you to choose from.
The first is a "wav" file. When you click on it, your Internet browser should, by default, call up your audio software and download the file. When it's done, you should be able to click on the "play" button and listen to the song. This file is 3.9 megabytes, so it will take 20 to 40 minutes for your initial download, if you have a 28.8 modem.
The second option is the RealAudio file. If you have current version of the RealPlayer installed on your computer, you can listen to a "streaming" version of the song. This format plays the audio file as it is downloading it to your computer. If you don't have RealPlayer on your computer, now is a good time to install it. It's free -- all you have to do is click on the RealPlayer icon above and follow directions. Once you have RealPlayer installed, you can use it for all your audio needs without having to go through the installation process again.

In '74 Hortonville had a strike
The teachers there were told to take a hike.
For a decade or so, things were goin' fine
Then in '86 it was Tommy's time.
He said we must change statute 111.70
Binding arbitration has got to go.
So in '93 came the QEO
Ever since then we've been feelin' mighty low.
Chorus:
Say no to the QEO
Say no to the QEO
Say no to the QEO
Say no to the QEO
Say it loud and proud.
No more QEO.
Tommy said taxes are way too high
The teachers get too much of the pie
So let's stop it, let's close the door
He said, "I've got a great idea, it's called the QEO"
It's been 4 years since we teachers had a raise
I think it's time for a new phase
Let's get together, let Tommy know
We're sick and tired of the QEO
Chorus
We work long and hard for the children's sake
All we ask is "Give us a fair shake"
Let's work together, let's get it done
Let's keep our schools in Wisconsin, number 1.
Chorus
