Marie Knutson, a para-educator at Lien Elementary School in Amery, was elected to the National Education Association (NEA) Board of Directors in 2011. Previously, Knutson served as an Education Support Professional (ESP) at-large director.
Knutson has been active in all union aspects relating to her time as an ESP. She has been vice president of the Northwest United Educators (NUE) UniServ and was president of the Amery ESP local union. During her role as NUE vice president, Knutson facilitated the first ESP caucus for members. In addition to recruiting members to get involved in their union, Knutson also helped organize Spooner ESPs and Turtle Lake ESPs. She also co-chaired NUE’s Policies and Procedures Committee and has served as the NUE ESP Program Director.
Knutson has been a team leader of local negotiations since 1992. She received the Wisconsin Education Association Council’s Paul Bierbrauer Award for ESP bargaining in 2002, which recognizes sustained excellence and innovation in bargaining.
For the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC), Knutson has served on the WEAC Resolutions and ESP Committees, was appointed and served two years as co-chair of the WEAC New Business Items group for the NEA Representative Assembly, and was elected by the WEAC delegation to represent WEAC as the first alternate to the NEA Resolutions Committee.
Knutson lives in Amery.
The Wisconsin Education Association Council represents the public policy, labor and professional interests of its members. WEAC is a strong voice for its members and for the 865,000 children in Wisconsin public schools.
