Kathleen Adee, who teaches 4-year-old kindergarten at Washburn Elementary School, was elected Summer Conference president Wednesday.
The election process was part of the Emerging Leaders core session to give participants experience in organizing a campaign and getting out the vote.
Also running for president was Paula Witbro, who teaches at Shawano High School. Each gave a campaign speech Wednesday during the lunch hour.
Witbro listed her Top 10 areas of concern at the Summer Conference. Among her suggestions for improving it were investigating the possibility of combining it with a Caribbean cruise, serving free beer at dances, serving breakfast until 11:00 and providing first-class accommodations next summer for Gov. Ed Garvey and Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton.
Adee supporters paraded a variety of Special K posters indicating that Kathleen is karing, kommitted, kind, etc. The candidate said she wants to increase Summer Conference participation from every membership category. She also promoted the concept of group activities to enhance and promote friendship.
I truly believe we must be united in everything we do, she said. I will be your voice and your inspiration.
Larry Nelson, of Waukesha, represented the worlds fat cats Wednesday in the core session on Teaching Labor Studies in the Schools. Instructor Felice Yeskel had Nelson occupy five chairs while his classmates representing middle and lower income people crowded into a smaller group of chairs. The exercise illustrated the uneven distribution of wealth in America today. The trend is worsening, Yeskel said. In 1976, the wealthiest 1% of American society owned 19% of the private wealth. By 1992, that increased to 37% and its been rising since then, too. We did not have trickle down, we had gush up, she said. Yeskel (front left) is co-director of United for a Fair Economy and a professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Her focus was to demonstrate innovative ways for participants to teach about the economy. |
