Delegates to the 2006 WEAC Representative Assembly adopted eight New Business Items. They are:
Hortonville
The WEAC shall not consider the affiliation of the Hortonville local or its potential membership until all of the original strikebreakers are no longer employed in the teachers’ bargaining unit by the Hortonville School District. The WEAC will not merge or formally affiliate with the AFT-Wisconsin while there are any strikebreakers employed in the teachers’ bargaining unit by the Hortonville School District and the Hortonville teachers are affiliated with AFT-Wisconsin. However, this does not prohibit the organizations from working on joint projects or purchasing services from one another provided that such are not related to this issue. This policy is to be reviewed annually by the Representative Assembly.
Mark Cebulski
The WEAC Representative Assembly goes on record to recommend the NEA Executive Committee candidacy of Mark Cebulski to the WEAC NEA Representative Assembly delegation.
Wisconsin Constitution
WEAC opposes any amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution that would ban civil unions, duplicate legislative language on marriage, invalidate collective bargaining agreements, and enshrine discriminatory practices in our constitution.
Since bargaining is done at the local level in Wisconsin, WEAC further urges each of its locals to engage in discussions with its members about the impact of the Constitutional amendment.
Wisconsin school district funding grassroots network
Whereas the State of Wisconsin’s school funding formula has caused financial crises in many rural school districts and other school districts with declining enrollment,
Be it resolved; that WEAC will facilitate the creation of a statewide grassroots network composed of interested WEAC members from these districts. The purpose of this network will be to cooperatively share information and coordinate action to educate the public on these crises in school funding. This item will be referred as a charge to our WEAC Legislative Committee.
Reform the calculation of ESP retirement benefits
The Wisconsin Education Association Council will educate our members and disseminate information via on-line and print publications and other appropriate lines of communication about the current inequalities in state law concerning calculation of creditable service toward retirement.
Kay Hansen
The WEAC Representative Assembly goes on record to recommend the NEA director ESP at large candidacy of Kay Hansen to the WEAC NEA Representative Assembly delegation.
Medicare D
That WEAC initiate a letter writing campaign to Wisconsin’s U.S. Senators and Representatives asking Congress to improve Medicare D by taking the following actions:
Michael Rosen
The WEAC RA goes on record to support the appointment of Dr. Michael Rosen to the Wisconsin Technical College System State Board.
In addition, the RA referred two items to the WEAC Board of Directors, the first one to be acted on in consultation with UniServ presidents:
Local presidents' network
WEAC shall establish a Local Presidents’ Network (LPN). A foundation for this Network will be established by the following:
Day care at WEAC meetings
Recognizing that younger members of WEAC are unable to participate due to commitments to their families,
In order to promote their participation WEAC shall subsidize and provide onsite daycare during the WEAC-RA, WEAC Fall Convention, Winter Conference, and Summer Academy.
