Van Roekel, a high school math teacher from Phoenix, was elected vice president of the NEA in 2002. The 25-year teaching veteran had served as NEA’s secretary-treasurer since 1997. While secretary-treasurer of the country’s largest professional organization, Van Roekel was widely applauded for his efforts to align NEA’s budget with its commitment to improve low-performing schools and enhance teacher quality.
Van Roekel will address Summer "Organizing" Academy participants Sunday (August 1, 2004) during the President's Welcome, the kickoff event.
The 2004 Summer Academy features a fresh new format and an important new goal: developing strategies for organizing members back home to engage in the Great Schools Action Plan.
During the 2004 WEAC Representative Assembly, delegates adopted the Great Schools Action Plan that calls on locals to participate in a unified plan to win support for a revised system of school funding that ensures that every child has access to an adequately funded public education and a fair collective bargaining law for teachers and education support professionals.
The WEAC Summer Academy’s training sessions are designed to allow local association teams to learn about core knowledge and organizing in collective bargaining and political action, to work together to develop local strategies, and to write local action plans.
