"Solidarity is a way of life and it means sacrifice," WEAC Vice
President Terry Meyer tells delegates to the WEAC Representative Assembly.
WEAC Vice President Terry Meyer appealed to WEAC members Saturday (May 3, 2003) to "stand together in solidarity and confront our enemies as one."
In an address to the Representative Assembly, Meyer emphasized the need for members to support each other.
"We can't fight our enemies if we are fighting each other. We can't fight our enemies if we let our differences split us," he said.
"Solidarity is a way of life and it means sacrifice . . . it means putting aside individual needs or desires for the good of the whole. It means working together. It means standing as one. It means fighting for the good of the whole, knowing that we take care of the individual. No faction's or group's needs supersede the good of the whole, but when one of us is in trouble like our brothers and sisters in White Lake or Prentice or Elmbrook or Mosinee or Weyauwega the whole must come to their defense, unified, unwavering and unselfish in their resolve."
Meyer said WEAC members have demonstrated that solidarity by supporting striking Tyson Foods workers in Jefferson, as well as by supporting each other as WEAC locals face difficult times throughout the state.
"If we do not stand together in solidarity and confront our enemies as one, the anti-union forces will win. And if they win, we lose."
He quoted Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer: "When you pick a fight with any of us, you pick a fight with all of us!"
"We stand in solidarity to face the relentless assault on our right
to exist," Meyer said. "We can't do this alone. We must stand
together. Solidarity for great schools. Solidarity with each other. Solidarity
for our union brothers and sisters. ... True solidarity makes us strong!"
