Great schools and strong unionism work hand in hand for the benefit of Wisconsins children, and the WEAC Summer Conference is a perfect example of that in action.
For the second year in a row, the Summer Conference agenda focuses largely on implementation of the Great Schools initiative. This project directly ties grassroots union organizing with efforts to increase parental and citizen involvement in our schools and improve the quality of education.
As a participant in this conference, you are at the forefront of this exciting project.
Over the last year, Great Schools has made great strides in increasing the involvement of communities in their schools. Many communities already have held School-Community Visions meetings, and many more are scheduling them for this fall.
Over the next four days, you will increase your knowledge of issues, learn how you can expand efforts to generate greater member unity, and develop strategies for building power and influence in your local communities, all with the ultimate goal of improving our already great schools. Youll also have the opportunity to learn more about your union and meet people who will help you accomplish these goals throughout the year.
We are back at UW-Whitewater this year because so many of last years participants said they enjoyed the campus and its services. In response to comments from last year, we have made some changes that we believe will make this years conference even more enjoyable and educational. Please let us know what you think.

To emphasize the importance of Great Schools to our association, this years Summer Conference features a core agenda of eight Great Schools academies.
These specialized three-day academies are designed to help you make connections between the issues that most concern you in your daily lives and the broader goal of improving education through the Great Schools initiative.
The eight academies are:
