The following motion was approved at the conclusion of the WEAC Representative Assembly on April 26, 1998. Delegates voted to accept the statement and send a copy to all local association presidents and all RA delegates.
This weekend a majority of the democratically elected delegates to the 1998 WEAC Representative Assembly voted to set the following priorities for action:
To accomplish these priorities the delegates elected a new leadership team and without opposition re-elected Vice-President Stan Johnson and President Terry Craney to three-year terms.
Delegates also called for the formation of a leadership committee (New Business Item #4) to address the QEO and revenue caps and to formulate a statewide action plan to reverse these unfair and shortsighted laws.
These priorities for action and decisions for direction were made through passage of motions, new business items and through secret ballot elections. Some of these were passed unanimously. Others were decided by much slimmer margins but all were supported by a majority and in a democratic union where the majority view determines direction.
There are members who will disagree with the direction set forth this weekend. Some may find it too strident, others not aggressive enough. But the majority has spoken and it's time to move ahead. Those members who disagree have the right to disagree and they are not our enemies. Our enemies have been and always will be ignorance, poverty and social problems that leave children without guidance and hope and elected officials who put the monied interests of the powerful and privileged ahead of the human needs of children and families.
Let us leave here today with our heads high, our vision clear and our priorities focused. But let us also leave here today with our minds and hearts open and our hand extended to any parent, student, community leader, or member who still wishes to join us in this good and just fight to protect kids and promote public education.
