These four students who plan to become teachers have won 1998 WEAC scholarships. Each will receive $1,450 per year for up to four years of study in the field of education. Each recipient is the son or daughter of a WEAC member. The scholarships, in their 12th year, were created to demonstrate WEACs commitment to educational excellence by maintaining Wisconsins superior teaching staff.
Elizabeth
Hepp, Franklin High School Elizabeth has a grade point average of
3.9 and ranks 9th in her class of 250. Her father, Richard Hepp, teaches
at Pilgrim Park Middle School in Elm Grove, and her mother, April Hepp,
teaches at Edison Middle School in Milwaukee. Elizabeth is and has been
involved in dozens of school and community activities and organizations,
including high school bands, the High School Planning Committee, swim
team, soccer team, drama, forensics, Student Senate, Franklin Community
Band, and Girl Scouts. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
In her scholarship essay, Elizabeth wrote: Spending the years of
my life living with and learning from teachers has taught me the importance
of sharing your own knowledge with others. Elizabeth is winner of
WEACs Kathy Mann scholarship for minority students.
Shaina
Halverson, Amery High School Shaina has a grade point average of 3.9
and ranks 5th in her class of 120. Her mother, Donna Halverson, teaches
at Lien Elementary School in Amery. Shaina is involved in Students Against
Drunk Driving, the Pep Club, French Club, track, volleyball, band, Student
Council, and other activities. She is class president and Student Council
president. She plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
and obtain a degree in elementary and special education. In her scholarship
essay, Shaina wrote: My goal in teaching is to make learning fun
and uplifting. Education is a priceless gift that will carry a person
throughout the rest of their life.
Nicole
Schill, West De Pere High School Nicole has a 4.0 grade point average
and ranks 1st in her class of 148. Her father, Elmer Schill, is a teacher
and member of the Brown County Special Educators Association. Nicole is
involved in Students Against Drunk Driving, Future Librarians of America,
the school newspaper, the Varsity Club, and National Honor Society. She
has also been active in musical performances, the schools literary
magazine, volleyball, Future Business Leaders of America, dance team,
and other extracurriculars. In her scholarship essay, Nicole wrote: All
my life I grew up around classrooms. Both of my parents, my aunt, two
uncles, three cousins, and many family friends are teachers. They are
people I look up to and respect. ... By following in their footsteps,
Ill begin teaching with a great attitude, helpful tips and ideas,
and all the encouragement I need.
Lucas
Ebert, Necedah Area High School Lucas has a 4.0 grade point average
and ranks 1st in his class of 42. His parents, Gregg and Kristi Ebert,
both teach at Necedah Elementary School. Lucas is editor of his high school
newspaper and active in forensics, Students Against Drunk Driving, Pep
Club, Student Council, N Club, and National Honor Society. He plays basketball
and baseball. Lucas plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In his scholarship essay, he wrote: Being a child of two teachers,
I have learned that service to others is an integral part of life. As
teachers, they have modeled through endless hours the need and the satisfaction
gained from helping others.
