Dream of a state that respects its teachers and values integrity in government more than money in politics.
That was the message that gubernatorial candidate Ed Garvey and running mate Barbara Lawton brought to the 1998 WEAC Representative Assembly April 25 in Green Bay.
Following their presentation, the nearly 1,000 delegates voted in favor of a spontaneous motion expressing the support of the RA for the Garvey-Lawton candidacy.
The vote does not constitute a formal recommendation of the ticket. That can only occur through WEACs candidate recommendation process that involves candidate interviews, thorough assessments of positions and records and a vote of members.
However, it did indicate the sense of the RA.
Governor Thompson also was invited to address the RA but declined.
Garvey said education is the most important profession in the state.
Garvey said he and Lawton want to spend public education funds on public schools, while Thompson wants to privatize our schools.
We are not going to let that happen, he said.
Garvey and Lawton drew on their theme by asking delegates to dream with us of a state in which:
Every child is special and deserves the best public education, Lawton said, whether in Maple Bluff or Racine or Superior.
