The next major step toward repealing the Qualified Economic Offer law and school district revenue controls is to elect friends of education this fall, members a major new WEAC advisory council have decided.
The council created in April by the WEAC Representative Assembly held its first meeting May 16 in Wisconsin Dells. The council is charged with developing a strategic action plan for winning repeal or modification of the QEO and revenue controls. It will advise the WEAC Board and present a report to the 1999 WEAC RA. The council is made up of UniServ, Student WEA and WEAC-Retired members.
WEAC President Terry Craney opened the first meeting by telling the approximately 35 members that everything is on the table. Over the next several months, they will discuss any and every option for accomplishing their goals, he said.
Different groups of members are at different places, he noted. Some want to pursue very aggressive actions and some want to take more moderate approaches. It will be up to the council to determine the best route, he said.
At the first meeting, council members did express a variety of differing opinions, but there was consensus, Craney said, that members need to organize around the November elections to put pro-education officials in office.
Electing friends of education to the Legislature and governors office is the first priority, Craney said.
The RA motion creating the advisory council requires it to study and analyze current ongoing strategies and tactics for the repeal/modification of the QEO and state revenue controls, including recommendations for change. The council also is to study the possibility of the mobilization of local members for any regional or statewide action. The next meeting will occur in mid-June.
